Shield Around Me

Psalm 3:1-8 is a reminder that faith is not the absence of fear, but the presence of God in the middle of it. David knew what it felt like to be surrounded, outnumbered, and spoken against. We know that feeling too — the whispers that say God won’t come through, the heaviness that settles in the dark, the battles that rise without warning. But this psalm teaches us to lift our eyes. The Lord is our shield, the One who surrounds us, the One who lifts our head when we cannot lift it ourselves. He hears every cry, answers from His holy hill, and gives rest even when the night feels long. This poem is simply a confession of that truth: that salvation belongs to the Lord, and we are held by the One who never turns away.

O Lord, how many rise,
how many stand against my soul.
Voices whisper in the dark,
“God won’t save you anymore.”
I have felt that weight before,
standing as if all alone—
one against a thousand fears,
with no strength to call my own.

You are my shield,
my shield around me;
You lift my head again.
You hear me when I call to You;
You fight for me, my friend.
I will not fear the darkness,
I will not fear the fight.
My salvation comes from You—
You are my strength, my light.

But You, O Lord, my shield,
my glory and the lifter of my head.
When I cry, You hear my voice
from Your holy hill instead.
Every doubt that shakes my heart,
every lie that tries to stay,
falls away before Your truth
when I turn my eyes Your way.

You are my shield,
my shield around me;
You lift my head again.
You hear me when I call to You;
You fight for me, my friend.
I will not fear the darkness,
I will not fear the fight.
My salvation comes from You—
You are my strength, my light.

I will lie down now in peace;
I will rest within Your care.
For the night is not my end—
You are with me even there.
Though ten thousand stand around,
I will not give in to fear.
For the One who holds my life
is the One who draws me near.

I cry out; You answer me
from Your holy hill above.
I am held, I am kept
in the shadow of Your love.
I cry out; You answer me—
You have never turned away.
Be a blessing to my Father
in the life I live today.

Rise, O Lord—my God, arise.
You will break the enemy,
not by strength of human hands
but by Your authority.
You have always been my help;
You will always be my stay.
You have already won the fight;
You have already made a way.

You are my shield,
my shield around me;
You lift my head again.
You hear me when I call to You;
You fight for me, my friend.
I will not fear the darkness,
I will not fear the fight.
My salvation comes from You—
You are my strength, my light.

Be a blessing to our Father,
in our words and in our ways.
Let our lives give You all praise.
